Characterization and Identification of TDOT Right-of-Way Vegetation and Correlation of Management Practices to Vegetation Persistence.

The ways we remove weeds and vegetation can have ramifications we did not expect. For example, hand-pulling weeds can result in compacted soil, spraying broad-spectrum herbicides may kill wanted plants, or killing out one weed can make room for an even more noxious weed.

We are working with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to see how their management practises are impacting the roadside vegetation. We will take a general survey of plant species present at 60 specific points in Tennessee. Then look at TDOT's records to see how that point was treated in the past. Once this information is put together we will have a clearer picture of what is going on and will be able to make recommendations for future management.

The map below has all the points we will be surveying and the calendar has the dates we expect to be out.
